The island of Mykonos, Greece, is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Cyclades islands.
Thousands of visitors flock to its amazing beaches, crystal clear waters, and its gorgeous cities. While one thinks of the beaches when imaging Greek islands, the capital city of Mykonos, Hora or Mykonos Town, is actually a fairly cosmopolitan area and features a lot of great nightlife opportunities and top quality restaurants.
There are also smaller, family-run restaurants and taverna’s that offer unique Greek food that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
Dining in Mykonos is certain to be a great experience. There are several different options. First, there are the larger restaurants.
These Mykonos restaurants offer a pretty wide menu, including local cuisine and some international fare. If you’re looking for a nice sit down meal to end your day or for a special occasion, these types of restaurants are perfect.
Of course, they may be a bit more expensive than other eating options, but you certainly get your money’s worth.
Just note that Mykonos is a very popular destination, especially during tourism season, so you may need to get to the restaurant early or ask about reservations. Otherwise, you may have a long wait before you can eat.
If you want something that’s a little simpler and lighter, you may want to visit one of the many taverna’s in Mykonos.
These small restaurants generally serve only Greek food. Some of these small taverna’s are housed in buildings, but some are outdoor or offer outdoor seating. Many times, they offer live music and even dancing.
Generally, Taverna’s open around noon and stay open late.
Tavernas are actually seen as more than just a place to eat—they are a key part in Greek culture, and if you visit Mykonos without eating at a taverna at least once, you’re missing out on a lot. You may find a taverna or two near the beach for those looking for a little snack after swimming.
Smaller, family-run restaurants also offer cheaper dating alternatives.
These little restaurants and bars are great for lunch, a quick snack, or just a drink or two. Popular appetizers like tzatziki, spanakopita, and tyrokafteri are often served here alongside full sized dishes and desserts.
Some people love sampling the local cuisine at taverna’s and other Mykonos restaurants.
These types of people throw themselves into new cultures and aren’t afraid to try different types of food.
However, not everyone has such a curious palate, and some people have restrictive diets. For these people, there are some restaurants that offer international cuisine, including things like hamburgers.
The large resort hotels generally have fancy restaurants that cater to just about anyone. Just be aware that these restaurants are going to be the most expensive places to eat, and their “authentic” Greek food may not be as authentic as the food from a taverna or other small, family-run restaurant.
If you visit Mykonos and don’t at least try a little of the local food, your visit may not feel complete. Whether you eat at a taverna, one of Mykonos’s restaurants, or a resort restaurant, you’re sure to find something on the menu that you enjoy. |
